This week PJ's other tutor, Jude, had already covered his vocabulary and timed reading, so PJ and I read a book together and I had him complete some worksheets--one was an exercise using homophones and the other involved cause and effect. The book was called Shelia Rae, the Brave, and it was about two sisters (anthropomorphic mice)--one of whom was very brave, and the other very cautious. The brave little mouse traveled far from home and got herself lost, but her sister had followed her, afraid Sheila Rae would get hurt, and knew the way home. PJ understood the reversal of roles that occurred in the story, and pointed it out to me beforehand. He also pointed out that the mice wouldn't be so brave if there were humans in the book. Ha!
After we read Sheila Rae together, PJ worked on the handouts. The first required that he read a short story and answer some cause and effect comprehension questions. He did well on this, but it took a bit of goading. The second worksheet, a fill-in-the-blank using homophones, he was able to knock out on his own in no time.

  1. It sounds like you and PJ have developed a great working relationship. Great to see how engaged he is.
