Julia TP #12

Yesterday, I brought a song, Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s In The Cradle”, to Divino’s and my meeting. It is a very sad song about a father and son’s relationship, and about how they cannot make time for each other. The father was too busy when his son was still little and growing up but he was excited to see his dad and patient and wanted to be just like him. When the son was grown-up and the dad was getting old, the son had become very busy living his own live, could not really make time for his dad. He had become just like his dad, the father realized.

I had prepared a cloze exercise which we used as a warm-up. Then we discussed the song. I know that Divino likes music and he has learned a lot of English via music. Yet, I had chosen this song in particular, because I happen to know that Divino is close to his dad. However, their relationship has changed over the years, he told me, and we ended up having a great conversation about how important it is to let someone know how one feels about him or her. I also chose this song as an introduction to what I want to do next time I meet with him. Next week I am planning to show him this youtube video that Kala had introduced me to. It shows several people with all kinds of backgrounds writing gratitude letters to loved ones and reading those letters to them over the phone. I will have him write one of those gratitude letters…
