In our tutoring session last week, PJ and I read a book together and then made flash cards for some of the relevant vocabulary. The book, Cool Crazy Crickets, was about a club started by a group of friends. It was divided into chapters based on the problems tackled by the friends--in chapter one, they came up with a name for their club, in chapter two, a mascot, etc. PJ and I took turns reading, as usual--splitting it up this way seems to help hold his attention. When we'd finished the book, I asked him a few questions about it, and then we made flash cards for the vocabulary from the story. I wrote the word on one side of the card, then held it up and asked him what it meant. We'd come up with a few example sentences together and then I had him draw a picture for each one.
