On 4/16/2014 I watched Victoria's Level 3 Speaking class. During class, we watched 4 students do individual presentations. The presentations were persuasive speeches that followed the Introduction, 3 Main Points (Each with two supporting details), and Conclusion model. Every student utilized Powerpoint, which I can tell they *tried* to not read the words directly off of, but in practice that was difficult not to do. Here are their subjects:
1) Why Learn Mathematics?
2) The Merits of Riding Bicycles-
After this presentation, there was a nice group discussion on how Tallahassee had a very nice bike program compared to Brazil. The majority of students in that class were from Brazil, and all of them were saying that in Brazil, no one rides their bikes in the city because it is too dangerous. One older man noted that you put your bike in the back of your car, brought it to a park, and rode your bike around a park.
3) The Death Penalty-
I was surprised how controversial of an issue that the student chose to pick, however, the argument was well supported. Not many students wanted to get into arguing the ethical points of opposing the death penalty, but they did mention that in Brazil, there is no death penalty.
4) Lowering the drinking age to 18
After the presentations, Victoria praised the students and briefly went over the conversations the students had. I thought after that that the key to get students to engage into those kinds of conversations is to have a non-rushed classroom environment, where students feel comfortable putting in their "2 cents" to each topic.
