Yesterday I brought Binshan to Lichgate park on High Road. We had only briefly talked about our love for nature, and I was excited to share a Tallahassee gem with her that was so close to campus. She was very impressed at how inconspicuous the entrance to the park was, given the hidden space beyond. We stood underneath the tree for a while, marveling at its generous size and age. I mentioned that the tree was estimated to be about 300 years old, and proceeded to help Binshan take a series of pictures beneath the tree.
We stepped around a few picnics, families, and yoga-doing couples to find ourselves by the labyrinth. I spoke to Binshan about the tradition of the Lichgate labyrinth as a place for contemplation and reflection, which she favored very much. I don't usually find myself participating in spiritual or religious activities but I appreciate any space designated to peace and solitude. It was lovely to spend the afternoon with my friend in a place of growth and hope.
