Yesterday, I observed Ryan Flemming’s classroom (a group 3
grammar class). The class, actually, had a quiz, their last quiz (not a final
exam, though), however, it was very interesting for me. I liked how Ryan was “fishing for questions”,
last questions before he handed out the quiz, and reminding the students of a
couple of things, that had been covered in class and the chart he would use to
grade them, so that they know what to expect. They had 25 minutes for the
written part (which included a “beautiful mistakes” section, re-writing
sentences and an essay question).
Besides the writing part, there was an oral test, too. Ryan
had put a variety of questions on the board, or rather on the screen (and given
a couple of instructions), which the students would have to answer in class in
recording them on their smart phones. No writing was allowed, and everyone had
to send the recording to his email address immediately. They all seemed well
prepared, and as if they knew what to expect for their “last quiz”. I was
surprised that all, except one, had a smart phone which they could use to do
the recordings. Ryan lent his own phone to the one that did not have one of his
own.
