TP# 13 Rick Shemanski

I met with Anton at his house. Ingrid apparently has left Tallahassee for the break, or is avoiding me. Nonetheless, we became our lesson by reviewing our previous lessons. We reviewed present perfect, present perfect continuous, and simple past.  Anton completed a quiz where he had to choose between the three verb tenses. He did very well and he only got one wrong. Next we moved on the topic of today’s lesson, past perfect and past perfect continuous.

I showed Anton how these tenses are very similar to the other perfect tenses. When forming a sentence is the past perfect, instead of “has” or “have”, use “had” plus the past participle form of the verb.  We reviewed keys words that indicate the usage of the past perfect tense, words like “yet”, “for”, and “since”. I explained these words meaning and Anton translated them to Russian to secure understanding of the words. We then reviewed past prefect continuous form. I showed how that form is very similar to the previous continuous tense we learned, “had”+been+ “ing form” of word. I explained how this tense is most used to describe a past action that occurred before another past action.  We completed several online quizzes about the past perfect tenses, and then completed another online quiz that included all perfect tenses.

The lesson was very hard and demanding. In order to end on a light and fun note, I had Anton do an extensive listening activity. We watched a clip from the movie The Notebook. The scene in which the main character, Noah, asks out Allie on the Ferris Wheel. The scene had very simple and clear language, and also is very entertaining to watch. Anton seemed to understand and enjoy the clip and asked for the title of the movie so he could watch it later.
