TP #9 April 7th
Today was a bit awkward initially, because Rebecca told me
that she would like “to politely make a suggestion” or something along those
lines. Her suggestion was that instead of doing her homework, I would help her
prepare for her TOEFL exam. I am not overly knowledgeable about the TOEFL, but
from what we have learned in the class, I do know that the test can be very
difficult. As I recall, it’s on the level of Group 3 or 4. Rebecca is currently
around group 2. I told her that by doing her homework, and me error-correcting
for her, we are learning the writing, reading, and speaking tools she needs to
get better at the TOEFL. She said that her dad would “kill her” if she had to
spend more time in the US (more money) and that she needed to get her TOEFL as
quickly as possible. I can relate to that sentiment, as I have been in the
position to take too long graduating before. However, I think her goal of
taking the TOEFL by June is very unrealistic. I think she needs at least 2 more
semesters at CIES before she can hope to pass the TOEFL. After our discussion,
we worked on her homework worksheets and tried to clear the air.
It looks like you had a good conversation with her, but what did you do during the tutoring session?
