I had my second tutoring session with my child tutee, Jun, on Sunday. For this session his mother wanted me to focus on his reading and writing notebook. For the first half of the session I worked with Jun to write a story in his workbook. The exercise reminded me of the free writing exercise Ms. Kim showed our class. The workbook asked Jun to look at a picture, come up with details, and write a story based on the picture. Jun was a little less focused during this session, I think he was ready for his spring break to start. I found that the best way to keep his attention is to focus on ideas he finds interesting. I had to bargain with him as well, a lot of, "If you write three more sentences, then we can read your book." This also worked to keep him focused on the present task.
After working in his writing notebook we read a small book about Babe Ruth. Jun was not familiar with Babe Ruth but he did know a little bit about baseball, this helped to peak his interest. He got through the entire book but I had to keep him focused, as he wanted to play baseball and pretend to be Babe Ruth more than read :)
Good to see that his reward is more reading!
