Last Monday I met with my tutoring partner, Daeyong, who is a
twenty-four year old CIES student from South Korea. While our original plan was to meet in front of the CIES
building and walk over to Strozier together, that plan was thwarted by the rain
so we decided to work in the CIES building. She showed me the bottom floor of
the building, which contains a good space for tutoring, so we decided to stay
there.
My main goal of the first session was to learn more about Daeyong and
what she wanted to accomplish in our time together. After graduating
university, Daeyong came over to Orlando and lived with family for about a year
or so to improve her English. After that, she wanted to do a bit of travelling,
so she stayed at a home-stay in NYC for about a week but left because she had a
very negative experience. She then travelled to Washington DC where she had a
much better time, and eventually came to study at CIES and improve her English.
In December, Deyoung is going back to South Korea and will be looking
for a job, so a lot of her goals are aiming toward speaking better English for
that purpose. Her main concerns are working on fluency, pronunciation, and
grammar (articles and prepositions being the first order of business). For our next session I plan on finding
some grammar activities along with an activity that allows me to get a better
sense of her fluency.
I am very excited to work
with Daeyoung. She is sweet and seems highly motivated. I expect to learn quite
a bit from tutoring her and hope she gains something as well.
