CO #1 Katelyn

Today I observed Vicky Ledbetter's IN-HI reading class. Ms. Ledbetter was out of town, so the class had a substitute teacher from CIES. The teacher started the class with a quick description and history lesson of St. Patrick's Day, since the holiday was today. She then transitioned into the reading lesson. To grab the student's attention - the teacher played the video "The Candy Man" from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The teacher had some technical difficulties with the computer but adapted her lesson plan quickly.

The teacher used the students' names and had a great relationship with them. She did not let any one student dominate the discussion either. The pacing of the class was good, and she took time to explain vocabulary and answer questions. Error correction did take place during the class. When students misunderstood a concept the teacher corrected them. The teacher also made sure the students were doing their work throughout the class.

  1. That's a good point, Katelyn! When using the communicative teaching method, it's critical for the teacher to encourage everyone to participate.
