Kelly TP #2

During our first “getting to know each other” tutoring session, Daeyoung expressed that she wanted to work on grammar (articles and prepositions in particular) along with fluency and pronunciation. She also expressed how she would need to be able to use English to communicate in professional environments. Therefore, for the first part our session I thought we could do a mock job interview. I presented the idea to Daeyoung and she said that she had done a mock interview before but that she would like to do it again. I asked her some typical interview questions and she provided in-depth answers. I didn’t do too much error correction because her main goal was working on fluency, but I did help in naming a few words and also with phrasing of some of her ideas. After the mock interview and getting a little sidetracked discussing some differences between American and Korean career ideology, we moved on to grammar.
I printed off a few grammar handouts before our session that dealt with articles and prepositions.  Daeyoung breezed through the first article handout, but luckily I had another more challenging one on hand. I gave her a chance to complete it and then we went over it together. Next, we did two preposition worksheets. The first worksheet was fill in the blank (with choices) using prepositions of place. Daeyoung only missed one or two questions on this handout that we went over. She struggled a bit more with the next handout, which dealt with prepositions before adjectives. I also struggled a bit with coming up with examples and properly explaining why some adjectives went with some prepositions, but I had a laptop so I was able to look up more examples to show her.

  1. It's good to hear that you're tutee was specific on what she wanted to learn and that way you can help her in that aspect. I think the mock interview idea is really good because it's applicable to all social situations. And yes, definitely so many differences in American/Korean career ideology... could go on hours talking about it haha. It's a good thing you had your laptop on you because I feel like coming up with examples at the top of your head constantly is hard to do!
