Wednesday afternoon, March 12, I had my second tutoring session with Saoud. In this second session, I wanted to work on Saoud's listening comprehension and writing skills. In addition, I hoped to review some grammar and introduce new vocabulary to him.
For our warm-up we continued with vowel pronunciation drills. I think this drill provides some meaningful benefit, since vowel pronunciation, both long and short ones, continues to be a challenge for Saoud. As a result, we took more time conducting this drill than last time. After our warm-up, we launched into a series of reading and writing exercises. For our grammar exercise, we reviewed the difference between the words "to" and "too" which required the use of many example sentences and significant explanation. Unfortunately, we did not have time to delve into new vocabulary words during this session as I had hoped.
One thing that I prefer my students to do during tutoring sessions is to take notes. Some students are better note takers than others. Saoud falls into the latter category, however he showed some improvement in our second session together. For my part, I have not done enough to provide a good mixture of exercises and variety of lessons for Saoud thus far.
Lastly, I encouraged Saoud to bring to our sessions any work from his regular language class activities which he may be struggling with or simply needs some extra practice.
