Bianca TP #1- Child

TP 1-
Mathew Hong- 3rd grade- born in the US to Korean parents. ESL level 3

Today I met Mathew Hong. He is a 3rd grader living in Tallahassee, Fl. Mathew is an identical twin to David (tutored by Carlton) born in the US to foreign Korean parents.

When I first walked into the library. I was so nervous to meet Mathew and his mother. This was my first time ever officially tutoring. I didn't know the proficiency level of either the mother or child. I brushed off my worries and walked in to find the mother in the lobby with her 2 students. I assumed it was her because I saw the 2 twin boys. I approached her and introduced myself. We met up with Carlton and spoke to the mother briefly about the children and their needs and goals to attain. Sara (the mother) expressed her concern that the boys cannot learn together because they are easily distracted and they are both on different levels of proficiency.

After we separated, I introduced myself again to Mathew and offered my hand to be polite. He seemed to understand my hand gesture and respond with his and a smile. His mother expressed her concern for his ability in reading comprehension. She also provided me with his homework folder and a weekly packet provided by his school.

I had him read the passage from the packet to analyze his reading and comprehension level. At first, he seemed to hesitate but once he got the gist of reading out loud to a stranger he felt more comfortable with his own mistakes and fluency. After about 2 paragraphs I had him stop and tell me what was going on in the story thus far. This activity worked great and he responded amicably and was able to demonstrate knowledge of main idea.

We went on to finish the rest of the homework packet and I was able to observe his math skills, which were very good for his age.

We also did a quick spelling test from the words provided. Over all the session went great and I hope we build a great tutee relationship.

I advised the mother to have him bring in anything that we is remotely interested in reading just so that he can be comfortable with the story line and be engaged.

  1. Hi, Bianca,
These kids seem really well behaved and its nice that the mom is so appreciative to us. My session went well, but I sense that they bore easily and keeping it fresh each session with some variety or a little surprise will help them with a positive attitude to our time together. Homework should only be part of our time together. There also may be a lot of sibling rivalry if mom compares them to each other a lot (I did not see this, but it is common).

  2. Good points, Carlton. It is great that the mother provided you with the materials to work on. You could analyze these materials for what skills they are working on, and integrate them into activities that you think would be enjoyable to the students.
