In the midst of my midterms I set
aside some time to tutor Ahmed at the library. What was only supposed
to be 50 min session escalated into a 2- hour session. The only
reason why time went over was because the concepts seemed to be
troubling my tutee and therefore took the extra effort to make sure
he knew what he was doing.
For the first 50 min of the session we
worked on a narrative essay outline that he was given in his writing
class. The topic was to write about his favorite holiday and why. He
choose a religious holiday typically celebrated after Ramadan. The
task was to fill in the template and expand his ideas.
In the beginning of this exercise he
seemed to have trouble coming up with supporting details but as our
conversation about the holiday unfolded it became easier for him to
talk about specific details that he could write about.
Getting him to actually write down his
feelings, even in the template, was the most difficult task of this
assignment. We took our time figuring out the best way to write it
down, which is what took so long.
The rest of the session is to be
continued in the next post.
