Today I had my first session with my second grade student, Jun. We spent the first part of the lesson getting to know about each other and his educational background. His mother wants me to focus on his writing, Jun has a workbook that we will go through as well as many books he enjoys reading. His mother suggesting reading for half of our sessions and working in the book for the second half.
I had Jun write a story about one of his angry bird toys, "Fatty." So that I could see what he needed help with for our next sessions. I allowed him to come up with the story and write it out sentence by sentence. While watching him write, I went over any grammar or spelling errors he made. We learned about the articles "a" and "an" and how to use them properly. He had not been taught this before but seemed to catch on quickly. By the end of the session he could tell me why he should use "an" instead of "a" when writing, "An alien." He has trouble distinguishing between "there" and "they are" I asked him if he had learned contractions such as "they're" and he said he had not.
I enjoyed teaching Jun, I think we will have a good time together.
