After the writing template assignment, Ahmed expressed his
concern for his reading quiz the following day. I knew this would mean going
over the allotted time but his concern worried me as his tutor; so I stayed.
I asked him what he felt was the most difficult part of
reading so that we could tackle his issue first. He said he simply couldn’t grasp
the concept of main idea. I asked him to provide me with a reading sample that
would look similar to his quiz.
We read the passage that was about 500 words in length at a
level 1 ESL student. First I had him read each paragraph and then quickly
summarize what the main points were and then proceed to the next paragraph. After
about the third paragraph he stopped focusing on the main idea but more on the supporting
details. I asked him to start writing in the margins of his text 2 or 3 words
that he could recall the important information of that paragraph. We did this
for the rest of the passage and at the end, with some help; he was able to say
the main idea in a complete sentence.
I do realize that this task took much longer than expected
but I feel that he really grasped the concept.
He texted me the next day saying that he did well on the
quiz and was pleased with my tutoring.
Until next time

Sounds like the focused and individual practice helped!
