This past Wednesday I was finally
able to meet up with my child tutee! I
was much more nervous before this session than I was prior to tutoring my CIES
tutee. My tutee is a five year old named Claire who is from Korea. I was a little worried that Claire wouldn’t
be up for any more school work (I couldn’t meet up with her until about 6pm)
and Claire’s mom warned me that she gets tired around that time of day.
However, Claire was excited and energetic for our session. Claire’s mother walked me through what Claire
previously worked on with her student-tutor which basically entailed reading
level-appropriate books and some writing activities. Claire read me a Dr. Seuss book, and whenever
she came across a word she wasn’t sure about she was able to sound it out. I was extremely impressed with Claire’s
reading ability.
After reading, we did a few writing
activities in a workbook that Claire has. The activities we completed were
prompts that read “I feel happy when…” or “I feel silly when…” which were
designed for the student to write a few sentences that fit the prompt. Claire would come up with sentences and I
would just help with slightly tweaking them if they didn’t make sense. All in
all, she has a very good knowledge of sentence structure and only needed minor
corrections. Claire is adorable and bright and I’m excited to work with her
over the next few weeks.
