TP #3 Katelyn

I had  my first session with my second grade student, Jun, this past Sunday. Jun's mother wants us to focus on his writing skills - she suggested that we read for half of hour session and write for the other half. Jun also has a workbook she would like us to work through.

For our first lesson, I focused on getting to know Jun and assessing his strengths and weaknesses. To see what we needed to work on, I had Jun write his own story about his stuffed animal, Fatty. Throughout his writing, I answered his spelling questions and checked to make sure he was not making any errors. I taught him how to use the articles "a" and "an" and when each is appropriate. He seemed to catch on to this idea quickly and by the end of the lesson he could tell me why you should use "an" when writing "an alien."

Jun has some trouble distinguishing between "there" and "they are." I asked him if he had learned about contractions like "they're" in school but he said he had not.

I think Jun and I will have a good partnership!

  1. Katelyn - excellent summary comments. I like your idea of having the student write paragraphs.

  2. I agree, David. Focusing on the sentence and paragraph level is a good way to focus on mechanics and development. I like your activity as well! Continue to use topics that he is familiar with.
