TP #2 Jude

I met with Ayoub the other day to plan and discuss goals for our tutoring session. Unfortunately, Mubarak had an exam that day and was busy, but Ayoub and I were still able to get some significant things done. The main issue Ayoub has been having in terms of grammar is regarding the simple present tense. Before class I went on some informative websites to teach the simple present, and I was was mostly happy with the results that I garnered.
However, the most significant strides we made during the class came from an exercise I had planned. Ayoub had said he wanted to read the Hunger Games, so I printed out ten pages of the first chapter and we went over some paragraphs together. Surprisingly enough, the narrative voice in the Hunger Games is full of examples of the simple present. "When I wake up" and "I stretch my hands." Although this voice is not necessarily the norm for English speakers, the examples of the simple present gave ample context for Ayoub and myself. Ayoub told me he would make a list of vocab he had trouble understanding, and then we would meet again next week. I look forward to continuing our lessons. I enjoy talking about the culture and landscape of Kuwait, and also sharing opinions with Ayoub and Mubarak.

  1. I like when students show initiative, i.e. "Hunger Games" and you're able to capitalize on the learning situation. Seems to be going well, good luck with the rest of your sessions!

  2. Great job integrating reading and grammar practice! Reading can serve as a great way for students to see and analyze how grammar is actually used.
