This past week I was able to meet
with one of my conversation partners, Fadima. Because she is new to the area,
we agreed to meet in front of the CIES building and then decide our plan of
action. We originally walked over to
Atomic Coffee, but it was too crowded to sit anywhere so we decided to leave. I
asked Fadima if she had walked around campus at all and she said that she had
not, so I decided to take her on a little tour. Fadima is eighteen years old, is from Mali, and speaks French. She was studying in Houston for a bit but didn’t
like how big the city was so she decided to come to Tallahassee where she has relatives. She has only been here for about two weeks,
but so far she is enjoying her classes and teachers. Fadima is studying at CIES now but will begin
her Florida State classes in the summer.
Because she plans on studying business, we walked by the business
building and Fadima was able to take pictures to send to her dad back in Mali. She
expressed that she really enjoyed the trees on campus and how she didn’t see
trees like that back home. While Fadima’s
English is excellent, she is very shy. It wasn’t easy getting her to converse, but hopefully
she will feel more comfortable speaking with me at our next meeting.
I know the exact feeling you are feeling right now... nervous and a little bit anxious. But, after having a few hangout meetings with my conversation partner, we've gotten a lot more close and she feels comfortable converting with me. I think as long as you keep open thoughts and keep the conversation light and smooth in the beginning, the relationship will definitely grow :)
