Last Wednesday, I showed Divino a scene from “The Big Bang
Theory”, the scene, that I have used for my Speaking Lesson Plan, called “Penny
is married”. He does not watch this sitcom on a regular basis, however, he
knows it. I had asked him to make a lot of notes while watching it, so that he
could tell me what was going on in the scene (not to do a role-play though),
and he did fine. Some things are quite absurd, when Sheldon, for example, feels
like a slave and refers to the African Slave trade, because he is dragged to a
Thanksgiving dinner at Howard’s mother’s place. In the same scene Las Vegas is
mentioned and gambling or getting married choosing one of many themes. We ended
up having interesting conversations about cultural issues in the US. We both
have never been to Las Vegas, and it is not high up on our priority lists. Yet,
we both imagine that there is nothing like it worldwide, or is it? At the end
of our session, I asked him to come up with the craziest theme he can think of
for either a theme hotel or a themed wedding. If he can make some time, he will
write it down for our next meeting.
