When I met Fumie and Ooki, we got our seats and settled in, enjoying the music as we waited. Fumie and I talked a bit about our experiences with circuses. She said she'd never seen a Japanese circus before, but Cirque du Soleil often comes through Japan. I realized that the circus is a strange tradition, and one I am terribly grateful for. We proceeded to take silly pictures together. Ooki and Fumie are both experienced photographs with sweet gear--I had a bit of camera envy. Though Ooki's speaking skills are weak, he is very adept at communicating through body language and a series of coo's and ah's. Ookie offered to take me through a tour of the photos on his camera, which showed a childlike curiosity and love for the world that I found myself relating to. As Ooki, Fumie, and I took selfies, people sitting behind us started to "photobomb" our pictures. The folks behind us had skill Ooki and Fumie were able to appreciate. After viewing some of the better photobombs, our entire section was laughing. It was a good way to start out the night.
The circus itself wasn't a source of conversation, we were all slack-jawed throughout the night. The entire event was an incredible show of the human form. I'll never forget it.
