On Monday afternoon, April 14th, I conducted my fifth and final tutoring session with Tatiana. Once again we decided to conduct our session outside in the CIES courtyard, since it was another beautiful day.
For this final tutoring session, the topic of study was grammar, listening and speaking. However in order to make this session more interesting for Tatiana, the exercise involved questions and answers through a telephone conversation between a travel agency salesperson and customer seeking a reservation. This exercise was designed to build her sales vocabulary and phraseology and check her ability to employ an adequate response through good listening and speaking (grammar).
The scenario called for me being the customer and Tatiana playing the role of a sales booking agent for a travel agency. I made numerous travel reservations over a simulated telephone call, with each one entailing very specific requests for things such as room accommodations, rental cars and access to other special amenities. This exercise tested Tatiana's ability to react and respond in a timely and appropriate manner using correct grammar while trying to meet my requests. Tatiana learned to respond to my unique requests with phrases such as: "there are multiple ways we can approach that," and "we have resources available for you and I'd like the opportunity to explain them to you." The point of each response for her was to demonstrate a willingness as a salesperson to show commitment to customer satisfaction. The critical component for this skill required the salesperson to have a strong command of English language.
In conclusion, this was an enjoyable session and served as a nice capstone exercise for our tutoring sessions. As I have stated in previous blogs, Tatiana is well on her way to becoming a strong speaker of the English language. She only needs persistence and regular practice.
