I met up with my conversation partner, Eunkyoung, at atomic
coffee. The story that Ms. Kim told us
about her experience in Hong Kong with drinking the cleaning water cracked me
up, and I retold the story to Eunkyoung who was also amused. I asked her if she
had any similar experiences while here in America. She responded that the one thing that
happened to her involved going out to eat in American restaurants. After ordering, she found that the cashier
always asked her if she wanted a drink with her food, and she was under the
impression that she pretty much had to order some type of soft drink with her
food. It wasn’t until being here a
couple weeks that she realized she could just ask for a water cup and not have
to order a soft drink. I told her that I could understand why she would think
that because many Americans do in fact opt for a soft drink with their meal as
opposed to getting a water cup.
