I met again with Anton for a tutoring session. We met at his house later in the afternoon. His roommate was cooking in the kitchen which was a little distracting at first. But I explained to Anton that often, there will be background noises present and he will have to understand English, in the presence of distractions. First we talked about what he was learning about and what tests he had coming up. I explained to Anton that we would be practicing using the past tense. Specifically the past perfect tense. I explained to Anton that we use the past perfect tense when describing a completed action in the past, or when describing a specific time period in the past.
I next explained that to form the past perfect tense, we put the
word "had" + the past participle form of the verb, the
"ed" form. I had a list of unformed verbs, and Anton then used those
verbs to make sentences in the past perfect tense. Next I had Anton tell me a
story from his past using the past perfect tense. Anton told me a story about
when he had gone hunting with his father, and they shot a wolf. I am always seem
surprised about how different Anton’s country is that ours. Finishing up our
lesson, I quizzed Anton on the past idioms we learned. He knew about half of
them without using a sentence. For some of the harder idioms I used them in a
sentence and Anton better understood their meaning. The ones that Anton did not
remember, I had his write them down with their defitntion.
