Kelly TP #12
In my last tutoring session with Ahlam, we
focused a lot on pronunciation of words using minimal pairs. I searched online for minimal pairs effective
for Arabic speakers and came up with a lot of results. One website that I found
helpful was http://www.tedpower.co.uk/l1arabic.html,
which lists common pronunciation problems.
I had Ahlam write down the minimal pairs that I dictated to her, and
after that she would read the words out loud. If her pronunciation was still a
little off, I would say the words out loud and then have her repeat after
me. Some sounds like in “sit” as opposed
to “set” were difficult for her to differentiate between. Also, the difference
between “note” and “not” gave her some difficulty. I feel like I can really
sympathize with her after doing the pronunciation activity in our TEFL class,
when we were trying to tell the difference between the words “skin” and “rice”
in Korean
