CO #1

The first class I was supposed to observe was Ryan Flemming's grammar class. Ryan had to observe another teacher for the day, so Candace Walters filled-in for him. The class seemed unified and happy to be there. They were very familiar with each other, and seemed comfortable working together and explaining things to one another.

The class began with a very simple pre-lesson activity in which they looked at a picture of a man in a kilt throwing a shot put. Candace asked the class to describe the picture using sentences that showed different ways to create relationships between noun and object. The class was very receptive to her explanations, as she wrote them on the board. I find it sweet that, no matter how old, students are more likely to participate if they can say their own sentence out loud, and see it written on a board.

The main lesson activity was a great game that required students to use modals, and interact with questions. It was a simple "board" game on a piece of paper that required a pair of dice and some pennies as game pieces. Every group had a great time and still upheld grammatical rules when playing, as I overheard.
