David Sutton TP #10

On Tuesday afternoon, April 8th, I conducted my second tutoring session with Mohammed.  He is a native French speaker and pronunciation of many English words is quite a challenge for him.  So as a warm us exercise, we did pronunciation of word pairings.  The "th" sound is especially challenging for Mohammed and it must be quite interesting to observe us working on the proper pronunciation of this letter combination out loud.  Other interesting word pairings included:  cot/caught, bat/bad, coat/caught, tail/tell, and darling/dialing.

After the warm-up exercise, I conducted a review quiz with Mohammed comparing words that are slightly similar in pronunciation but often confused in communication.  For example:  loose versus lose, effects versus affects, there versus their, and then versus than.  Mohammed did well identifying the proper usage of each word  in this exercise and those he missed were easily explained and corrected.

For our last exercise, Mohammed read aloud from a news article, where we once again we worked on pronunciation and word meaning.  His reading and listening skills are definitely further advanced than his speaking and writing skills, so I continue to work with him on the latter.
