Ben - TP #12

Yesterday I had my last tutoring session with Jason. I was very sad to say goodbye to both Jason and his father because they were both so accommodating, hard working, and dedicated; I had a fantastic time getting to know both of them. For our last lesson I introduced Jason to another Greek myth, this time about Perseus and Medusa. Jason seemed to have a little bit of knowledge about the story already so it was nice that he had some schema going in to the lesson. As soon as we got started Jason had questions. He is very inquisitive, and he wanted to know why some people were able to defeat other people, why monsters were specifically the way that they were, and what each power of the Greek gods was. I went over as much as I could with him and eventually he had sufficient (it seemed) answers to all of his many questions. Then I had Jason read the abbreviated story (that I had printed) out loud to me, as per our usual lesson, and then ask me any questions about vocabulary or plot points that he did not understand or may have missed. In light of some of the notes I received after viewing my lesson on video last week, I made sure to do a lot of modeling for Jason, especially when it came to the vocabulary words.
We made our way through the text slowly but surely. Jason was in fine form yesterday and actually spent about ten minutes trying to convince me that he was 12 years old. I thought he was in third grade and would therefore by closer to 9 or 10. We had a long talk about correct math, and a little bit of a talk about playing jokes, before we checked with his dad. I was right, he's 9.
Before I knew it, our last lesson had come to an end. I spent the last five or ten minutes of the session talking with Jason and his father, letting them know how thankful I was for the opportunity and how much of a pleasure it has been to teach Jason and get to know both him and Mr. Seo (his father). Mr. Seo was kind enough to take down some of my contact information and told me that if I end up going to Korea at any point in the future to let him know because he has a lot of connections and he would love to help me out. Then we took this amazing picture of Jason and I high fiving in the front area of the library. All in all, I had a glorious experience tutoring Jason and I hope to have many more like it in the future.
