Last Sunday Divino and I had to meet at a coffee place, so
that I did not watch the youtube video (about these people writing gratitude
letters to their loved ones) with him. Instead he had asked me what the
difference was between “may be” and “maybe” and if I could go over that subject
with him. I prepared, or rather, found a couple of good work sheets. In my
introduction I reminded him of a few clues like substituting the compound word
“maybe” for “perhaps”, “possibly” or “mayhap” (even if this one is not used a lot
anymore, and I told him so): Maybe I will go to the gym tonight (Perhaps I will
go to the gym tonight). I may be going to the gym tonight. I told him to choose
“maybe”, if the substitution makes sense. To try to substitute “perhaps” for “may
be” would mean that the sentence does not have a conjugated verb (a verb and an
auxiliary).
