I met with Koo inside CIES after her classes to crack open the workbook. We returned to the matter of how to pronounce croissant, as we inevitably do each session. I think she feels confident when she sees a word written down as it sounds, which I did as follows: "craw-sawnt."
We then moved on to talk about the differences between a life-raft and a lifeguard, words for talking about entering water (fall-in, dive, jump, etc). As we were reading example sentences, Koo pronounced "weatherman" as "weathermen". I talked to her a bit about how the pronunciation of the correct vowel makes the difference between singular and plural. She was confused by the fact that weathermen could refer to both men and women. We decided they should be called weather people. We worked on the "v" sound a while, and continued to reinforce the correct pronunciation of the "r." Koo, for a reason I am unable to identify, often mixes up the "f" and "p" sounds. I try to curb this by explicitly mentioning that her teeth help make the "f" sound and the lips help make the "p" sound.
