Sarah TP #15

This week PJ and I were able to relax and just read a book together. He had picked the book D.W. Gets a Library Card, from the Arthur series. I remembered the television show Arthur from when I was a kid, so we talked about it a bit before we started reading. I also asked him about how he checks out books (like this one) from the library--if he uses a library card, what he had to do to get one, etc. In the book, D.W. can't get a library card until she's able to write her full name. I took this opportunity to ask PJ, again, about his own full name. He had told me before that his real name is Ryan, but I'm pretty sure he's pulling me leg. I explained that D.W. is an acronym, and that it stands for Dora Winifred. He told me that PJ "doesn't stand for anything, so it doesn't need the dots." But later on, he slipped up and said that the P stands for ...[it sounded like Paul?]
We finished reading the book, and I wrote down some comprehension questions for PJ. What does D.W. have to do to get a library card? What does D.W. stand for? etc. After he answered my questions, we talked some more about abbreviations and acronyms, and I wrote down some he would be familiar with, like CIES, where his mom works. At some point the topic shifted, and PJ asked me where I had gone to elementary school. He asked me to draw a map, and when I had finished, he measured the distance from his house to my old school (9 1/2 inches! ha!) Then he asked if I had lived in his house. He is just too cute. PJ knew that this was supposed to be our last tutoring session, and before I left he wanted to show me all his toys.
I asked PJ and Ms. Kim if I could continue tutoring him for the second part of my TEFL certification, and they both agreed :)
