For my final tutoring session with my CIES tutee, Daeyoung, we worked on
some common colloquial language. She had just finished finals and was getting
ready for a solo trip to Chicago, so we went over some words and phrases that
might be helpful on her trip while navigating the airport/city/hotel. I’ve
found that a lot of the CIES students have done quite a bit of travelling
around the United States, and in some cases even more than I have! It’s a good reminder
that the US has so much to offer in terms of travel, and sometimes I need to
look no farther than my own country in order to satisfy the travel bug. Anyway, we went over things that have
multiple words to describe them, such as suitcase, luggage, and bag. We also looked up some sights for her
to see while she was in Chicago, and had a conversation comparing tourist-y
travel with travelling like a “local” and discussed the merits of travelling
both ways.
