In mine and Abdulrahman’s last meeting we went over the alphabet, the difference between consonants and vowels, and some pronunciation rules. To begin this lesson we started with a recap of our previous lesson. I had him tell me the alphabet, then list the vowels. It was obvious that he had been practicing his reading and pronunciation. Once again we went over words with long and short vowels, he was meticulous, but accurate with his work. I could see him engage and make a concerted effort to pronounce all the words correctly. Previously, Abdulrahman asked about the rules of adding “ing” to verbs. At the time I wasn’t sure of the exact rules so for this session I brought materials to go over this concept. When I was explaining that verbs ending in “e” required only for the “e” to drop and the “ing” replace it. He made the correlation that, in most cases, the same verbs that make the vowel sound long, are the verbs that do not require a second consonant when adding “ing”, and just the opposite with verbs using the short sound of vowels requiring double consonants when adding “ing”. This realization was one that I had not necessarily noticed until he pointed it out.
