KyungAh TP#14
I met with my CIES tutee on April 2nd (Wednesday) at 4pm. I met with him at Strozier library in the Starbucks lounge. I did not see him ever since spring break and so, when I met up with him I asked him how his spring break was. He said he had a great time and that he went to Tampa with his friends and just relaxed. I asked him if he went anywhere else and he said he did go to Orlando for one day and then came back to Tampa. I asked him what he did in Orlando and he said to go shopping. But, he said in Tampa there is an Arabic restaurant that he goes to eat when he is very home sick. I didn't know there was an Arabic restaurant there, but when he talked about how he drives long distances for his home food I totally understood. I told him that I don't blame him because I will drive 5hrs to Atlanta just to eat Korean food. I told him that when I'm really desperate, there is a Korean restaurant in Gainesville (only 2 hours away) and I'll drive there to go eat Korean food. It was really nice to relate with food because even though we are two very different cultures, just being culturally sensitive and responsive makes a difference. He did not feel embarrassed or shy about telling me how he missed his home food because I know the feeling. We just sat in the library and chatted for about 45minutes and then I had to go because I had to meet with my child tutee at 6pm. So, I told him best of luck for next week and that I will see him sometime next week again!
