Today I met with Eun-kyoung and Jaoa. We decided to focus on TOEFL style reading passages for our session. After some searching, I found a passage that was used in a previous TOEFL exam. The article was seven paragraphs long and it was about Meteorite Impact and Dinosaur Extinction with fourteen comprehension questions. Both of my tutees study reading but do not specifically study TOEFL passages. So this exercise was a good window into what they will eventually be studying in their classes. The exam allows for twenty minutes for both reading the passage and answering the questions. So I set a timer for 10 minutes to allow them to read through the passage. They both finished at about 8 minutes. We then went through the questions together.
My tutees were good at answering the vocab questions due to their ability to use context clues. The questions they were having the most problems with were the questions that involved main idea concepts where each answer choice could make sense.
I told them that the questions are pretty formulaic and once the see how the questions are formed and the best way to attack them, they will not have problems with answering these questions.
