I met with Alphon today. He is from Africa and has been in Tallahassee since the start of the semester. He has beginner level communication skills and has only started studying English recently. I asked him how he liked Tallahassee and he seemed very disheartened. He likes his classes at CIES and is very excited by his progress, but he is lonely. He says he goes from school to his apartment and is bored most of the time.
Alphon really wants to get a job, so that he has something to do after school. He knows he only has a student Visa so finding a job is pretty impossible - especially not knowing any English.
I liked meeting with him, and I hope we get to meet more often so that he can make more friends.
Yeah, that s perhaps the most difficult part of living so far away from home. Perhaps you could help get him involved in some campus-based activities.
