Katelyn TP #2

I had my first meeting with Joao today. I wanted to meet both of my tutees separately first to see what their different goals will be and how I can incorporate them together in our group sessions. Joao is from Brazil and is taking classes at CIES to obtain his TOEFL so that he can move on to his Master's degree at the FSU law school. He enjoys electronic music, going to the gym, and eating healthy. His girlfriend will be going to FSU as well in hopes of getting a Nutrition degree. He is already friends with Eun-kyoung, and he seemed excited that we were paired together.

Joao wants to focus on his conversational speaking practice. He is more comfortable with reading but would also like to work on building up his vocabulary. I will have to find some good speaking exercises that will aid him and also help Eun-kyoung. Joao likes the speaking exercises he has done in class, especially the ones that have many examples to follow. But, he feels this type of learning is too formal when he tries to use it in restaurants or with new friends. He also wants to make more American friends since he is starting to pick up the accent of his fellow second language students. Joao told me that he would like to be corrected if he ever speaks incorrectly and that he would also like to go over pronunciations.

I think Joao, Eun-kyoung and I will be a good team!

  1. Sounds like a good first meeting! Between the both of them, you can really do some good interactive activities that will work on speaking.
