Rick Shemanski TP#4
My fourth tutoring session was with Ingrid Bailey. Ingrid is still very new to English and is in level 1-2. I met with Ingrid at her apartment, she seemed very relaxed and I think it helped her learn the material faster. First, Ingrid and I reviewed her CIES homework. She made a couple errors on her pronoun homework sheet. I explained what she did wrong and she seemed to understand her mistake.
Next Ingrid took out an extra practice homework assignment. The assignment had students underline the topic sentence of a paragraph. Ingrid had made a mistake and underline the wrong sentence for two of the paragraphs but overall did pretty good. Next, Ingrid read the paragraphs out loud to work on her pronunciation. Ingrid struggles pronouncing H, th, and ed. We went through each paragraph and addressed any words she mispronounced. When Ingrid did not know a word, I would try and explain it to her but she often did not understand my explanation. She would often have to look words up using her french to english dictionary. Next session I will try to teach Ingrid better context clue skills, so that she can start parting with her dictionary. After reading through all the paragraphs, we then proceed to read a book that Ingrid had checkout. The book was for middle school girls, but I fear it is too advanced for Ingrid. We progressed the the first page and even I was a little confuse about the text. The book is poor quality, filled with run-on sentences and unnecessary verbiage. I will search for a book that is more appropriate for Ingrid's level.

It's wonderful that error correction was done during the tutoring session. Keep up the good work! :)
