I met with Eun-kyoung today. I gave her a new novel to read last week called Beautiful Ruins. I read this book over spring break and really enjoyed it. Eun-kyoung has been looking for a fun book to read so I wanted to see if it would be something she could enjoy. She said she liked it and has only gotten through about two chapters. The format of this book is a little different - in that each chapter jumps from the year 1960 to today. There is also a character who does not speak English and struggles to make himself understood my others. I thought this would be a character Eun-kyoung could empathize with. We spent the first part of our session discussing the book and going over any questions she had about vocabulary and content. I asked her a few simple comprehension questions and it seemed like she was following the story well. She remarked that it seemed a little challenging to finish, but that she wants to continue reading it.
We then focused on TOEFL style reading passages and comprehension questions. I have some sample passages that are shorter than the actual test and we have been going through them, since Eun-kyoung has not started studying the larger passages yet. I plan on emailing her more of these passages for her to bring into our next session so that we can go over the questions and vocabulary.
Looks like you are addressing both intensive and extensive reading skills. Well done!
