TP #6 Jude

On Sunday I had my third tutoring session with PJ. Because we have met for many weeks now, the effective filter is significantly lower, and all I have to do is ask PJ how his week was and he is willing to read and speak with me. We did a brief exercise involving choosing the right word in the past tense depending on the context of the sentence. This was very simple for PJ, and he got nearly every answer correct on his first guess.

The next activity that we did was read a book called "Sheila Rae the Brave." The book is essentially about a mouse that isn't afraid of anything until she looses her way and gets terrified when she is lost. PJ is really helping me learn for my coming job in Korea on how to handle Children. The best strategy for reading the book was helping PJ by reading some parts while he read others. Also, if he wanted to talk about the pictures, It was helpful to talk with him about them because reading stories can sometimes become tedious.

Children really have incredible imaginations. I know it can sound stereotypical, but when they are reading a picture book, the scenarios and questions they can come up with are so interesting. PJ was fascinated by the scale of the characters in Sheila Rae. He kept asking how large the mice would be if they were in our world, and I tried to explain that it was "just a story," but I started asking the same questions. Why was this mouse able to have a full sized dog? Was she actually mouse size or human size? Why were the rocks in the story so big? I feel like it benefits students if you jog their imaginations because creativity is such an important part of succeeding in today's world. We were able to read the book, but I was left with a lot of questions myself !

On our next lesson, I think PJ and I are going to play Pokemon cards and read the words on them. I am really looking forward to this as I used to play Pokemon cards when I was younger and I'm going to see if I can find some of my old ones!
