Isaac CO#2

For my second classroom observation I had the opportunity to sit in on Ryan Flemming's speaking class. Ryan began class by taking role then moved right into a timed speaking practice. He inquired to the class what form a problem to be stated in. He then assigned the class to find the solution, as many as there could be. He asked for a reason behind their solutions and what form reasons take. He then recapped the whole exercise and transitioned into his second timed speaking exercise. I really liked a phrase he used at the beginning of the second exercise, "perform in action, get feedback, try again." He then instructed students to write down some key words from the prompt to give themselves an outline for the next part of the exercise. Students then broke into pairs and gave their opinions of how to handle the problem at hand. Ryan kept a small notebook to keep "beautiful mistakes." After the second exercise, Ryan went over some beautiful mistakes which transitioned into adverb clauses. For the final exercise, Ryan posted another problem through the projector. Students were instructed to work in new groups. Ryan was organized and helpful to his students. I found his notebook of beautiful mistakes to be something I will use in my future lessons.

  1. Ryan's a wonderful teacher! You can learn a lot about how to provide feedback on their speaking skills from him.
